Tiananmen incident 1989 – Quora

tiananmen-squareI can testify directly about the incidents of Tiananmen Square in 1989. I lived and worked in Beijing six years before that event. So, this is my summary: Economic rural reform started in 1978, therefore, for the first time peasants were allowed to settle thei “free market” with all kind of agricultural products. At the same time, central planification was supressed gradually. In the streets through loudspeakers and the official press, it was repeated over and over again the following slogan: “each person should manage his own bowl of rice”, and the “food stamps” or “ration tickets” were canceled.

That was the starting point of the conflict: The people stopped being peaceful and began to be aggressive. There was confusion, discomfort and vulnerability. The big question was: How to survive without money, business and, especially, the support of the State? 1988 was terrible. People began to scream, fight, run over or push each other. I said to myself: “here is going to happen something very serious”.

The leadership of the party wanted to start with economic reform in the cities. But there was no consensus on how to do it. There was a division of criteria and a “power vacuum”, while the Tiananmen Square was filling up with people: students, workers, all kinds of people, national and foreign, the international press, and so on. The most visible groups, supported by the transnational press, were the pro-democrats; who did not care so much about the issue of survival but the change of political regime. The PLA refused to obey orders to evict the square. Deng Xiaoping then summoned the armies of the south, who vacated the square with tanks and many people died, not in the same square but around. According to official figures, three thousand died, but it is estimated that there were many more.

Prime Minister Zhao Ziyang was removed from office. Deng Xiaoping concluded that if the people want freedom, they will have it, but it will be “economic freedom”, not “political reform”. And that was the starting point of the “economic reform”, which was also reinforced by the formula: “one country, two systems”. This slogan allowed the recovery of HK in 1997 and the expansion of foreign investment in China. The main investors in China did not come from Western countries, but from the Chinese themselves: Taiwan, Hong Kong, large Chinese investors in the US, Canada and Australia, and certainly also Japan. These investments have allowed for extraordinary growth in China for several decades. What comes later is yet to be seen …
